My Fireside Chat with Peter Hotez, MD, PhD, co-creator of world’s most affordable COVID-19 vaccine, CORBEVAX
In March 2022, I had the fortunate opportunity to interview my friend, former professor, and mentor from Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Peter J. Hotez. A world renowned virologist, humanitarian, and master of bow ties, Dr. Hotez took time to discuss the pandemic, access, and the political realities of getting funding and engaging with the US government to approve an under $2 vaccine.
Making vaccines more accessible for everyone, everywhere.
Few have impacted the world more than Peter Hotez MD PhD and Maria Elena Bottazzi PhD with CORBEVAX: the world’s most affordable COVID-19 vaccine. They’ve been impacting the globe for more than a decade, helping the most resource limited countries. CORBEVAX is the only sub $2/dose vaccine, vegan, doesn’t require deep freeze cold storage like the mRNA vaccines, and has the best safety profile. No wonder they were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
#Equity: no patent, open-source, vaccine blueprint is free
#Affordable: $1.90 per dose
#Accessible: refrigeration only, no deep freeze (cold chain) needed
I’m been very fortunate in my career to be counseled, mentored, and advised by clinical and business icons from Harvard University, Baylor College of Medicine, Cornell University, and Rice University. That’s why it was such a treat to spend an hour a few weeks ago catching up with Dr. Hotez.
We talked about how vaccine development is like brewing beer, yeast, vaccine equity, funding for CORBEVAX, and how we can empower, equip, and give autonomy to Low Middle Income Countries (LMICs) to quickly vaccinate the world. Hint: It’s a lot more pulling vs pushing. #disruption strategy
